ASK A QUESTION, SAVE A LIFE
The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical, and proven suicide prevention training. The signs of crisis are all around us. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know. QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. Our goal is to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize the warning signs of a crisis, intervene effectively, and refer those in need to appropriate resources.
What is QPR?
QPR is an emergency response protocol designed to act quickly and decisively when someone is in crisis. Similar to CPR for physical health emergencies, QPR is a life-saving technique for mental health emergencies. It empowers everyday people to make a difference and potentially save a life by following three simple steps: Question, Persuade, and Refer.
How QPR Works
- Question: The first step in QPR is to recognize the warning signs of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This may include direct verbal cues, changes in behavior, or expressions of hopelessness. Once identified, it is crucial to approach the individual and ask direct and open-ended questions about their feelings. This step is about breaking the silence and showing that you care.
- Persuade: After questioning, the next step is to persuade the individual to seek help. This involves listening to them with empathy and without judgment, providing reassurance, and expressing genuine concern for their well-being. Persuading someone that there is hope and that help is available can be the turning point in their crisis.
- Refer: The final step is to refer the person to appropriate resources for professional help. This could involve connecting them with a mental health professional, accompanying them to a crisis center, or calling a suicide prevention hotline. Ensuring that they receive the help they need is vital to their recovery and safety.
Why QPR is Effective
QPR is based on evidence and best practices in suicide prevention. It is practical and easy to learn, making it accessible to everyone, from friends and family members to teachers and coworkers. The training provides participants with the confidence and skills to act swiftly and effectively, which can be critical in preventing a suicide attempt.
