Frequently Asked Questions
What is Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC)?
Behavioral Health Urgent Care is a walk-in clinic that supports individuals experiencing the early signs of a behavioral health crisis, but who do not require emergency room or inpatient care.
It serves as a middle ground option—more immediate than outpatient therapy, yet less intensive than hospitalization.
Who can be seen at BHUC?
BHUC serves adults age 18 and older.
When is BHUC open?
BHUC is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
We are closed on weekends and holidays.
Do I need an appointment or referral?
No appointment or referral is needed. All walk-ins are welcome.
Why should I choose Behavioral Health Urgent Care instead of the emergency room?
BHUC works much like an urgent care clinic for physical health. It’s the appropriate place to go when a situation feels urgent but isn’t life threatening.
BHUC is a good option if:
- You’ve stopped therapy or medication and symptoms are getting worse
- You’re struggling to function day-to-day but don’t need hospitalization
- You can’t wait weeks for an outpatient appointment
- You want help now and hope to avoid inpatient care
- You need a behavioral health assessment, symptom stabilization and help getting connected to ongoing care
What are some examples of concerns BHUC can help with?
- Increased depression or suicidal thoughts following a major life event
- Panic attacks that are starting to limit daily activities
- Worsening anxiety, mood changes, or substance use concerns
- Feeling overwhelmed and unsure what level of care you need
If you’re unsure—that’s okay. When in doubt, just come in.
What services are provided at BHUC?
- Behavioral health assessments (mental health and substance use)
- Medication management when clinically appropriate
- Connection to ongoing services such as:
- Outpatient therapy
- Medication management
- Case management
- Substance use treatment
- Medication appointments are often scheduled the next day, and in some higher-risk situations, the same day.
How long does a visit usually take?
Most visits last 1–2 hours, including paperwork, the assessment, and care planning.
Do you provide psychological or clinical testing?
No. BHUC does not offer full psychological or clinical testing (such as IQ or autism testing). If testing is needed, we will help connect you to the appropriate provider.
What does it cost? What insurance do you accept?
BHUC accepts all types of health insurance, and no one is turned away due to inability to pay.
What should I bring with me?
If available, please bring:
- Insurance information
- A list of current medications or medication bottles
- Any relevant health history information
Is public transportation available?
Yes. LexTran has a bus stop at the front of our campus on Newtown Pike, with a walking path to Building 5 (BHUC and Newtown Counseling).
What if I need a higher level of care?
If BHUC is not the right level of care, we work closely with local hospital systems, emergency departments, and EmPATH services to help you transition smoothly.
We also have a Mobile Crisis Team that can come to you and coordinate care with BHUC providers.
