CDC recommends booster shots to people with certain mental health conditions

The link between mental and physical health is clear in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recently updated list of underlying conditions that put people at higher risk for severe COVID-19.
The list now includes schizophrenia and mood disorders like depression, with the CDC recommending booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccine to people with these diagnoses.
The addition of these underlying conditions is based on important research into how these conditions impact the body’s response to COVID-19.
People with schizophrenia were found to be three times more likely to die from COVID-19 than those without schizophrenia, according to a study from New York University where researchers analyzed data from 7,000 COVID-19 positive participants.
In this study, schizophrenia was the second highest risk factor for death from COVID-19, second only to age.
“Researchers believe that schizophrenia’s impact on the body’s immune system, specifically the higher levels of inflammation during a COVID-19 infection, may be an important contributor,” said Dr. David Hudson, chief medical officer at New Vista.
“Ongoing research is showing not only are individuals with schizophrenia more likely to have chronic inflammation, but this inflammation can have negative impacts on both mental and physical health,” he said.
