Lexington, KY – February 14, 2024
The newly renovated New Vista Schwartz Residential Substance Use Treatment Center in Lexington offers an evidence-based, supportive path to recovery that continues to produce successful outcomes for clients.
“This place really saved my life,” said Jess Stiffler, a former Schwartz client who now works as a Peer Support Specialist at the treatment center. “This was the first time I saw someone who had been successful and not just recovering but thriving.”
Renovations include updated flooring, furniture and appliances in the Men’s and Women’s wings. New common areas feature space to gather for support or just relax and connect with others. All renovations to the Schwartz Center were made with the goal of providing a welcoming and comfortable environment as residents work towards recovery.
Substance use disorder remains a public health crisis in the Commonwealth with more than 2,000 Kentuckians dying from drug overdoses in 2022, according to Governor Beshear. But expanded treatment options and breaking stigma around addiction are proving to be helpful, he said.
New Vista has worked to expand access by offering transportation options and allowing clients to continue or begin taking medications for opioid use disorder to assist with treatment.
Stigma was a barrier for Frith Young, who had given up on residential treatment as a solution for her struggles with substance use, until her stay at the Schwartz Center.
“Slowly but surely my walls started crumbling down around me,” she said. It was thanks in large part to the people who worked at Schwartz and refused to give up on her.
Like Stiffler, Young is now in recovery and has committed her life to helping others with addiction. She is also a Peer Support Specialist at the Schwartz Center, offering understanding to clients each day.
“I have never felt so, not just fulfilled, but grateful for my own life,” Young said.
