Celebrating Recovery Month – Recovery is Possible

September is National Recovery Month, a time to support and celebrate our loved ones in recovery and spread awareness. At New Vista, we know recovery is possible because we see clients make progress every day. Recovery looks different for each person and that’s why New Vista offers multiple treatment options, including residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment and medications for opioid use disorder.

Peer Support Specialists also offer an unmatched understanding of clients, having walked in their shoes. “Being able to help people in their recovery journey means a lot to me,” said Macey Ollinger, a New Vista Peer Support Specialist serving Scott, Harrison, Nicholas, Bourbon, Franklin and Woodford counties. She’s been in recovery since 2021 and lost her sister to an overdose, so she knows the pain substance use disorder can cause. “Sharing my story helps to instill hope in other people who are still trapped in that cycle,” she said. Her relationship with clients allows them to open up in ways they might not be comfortable with otherwise. This month, she said, it’s important to continue to break the stigma around substance use and get people the help they need.

Support your loved ones during recovery month.

Start a conversation. Break the stigma by asking your family and friends if they’re struggling with substance use in a nonjudgmental way. It might be uncomfortable, but taking this simple step could save a life.
Share resources. Let the people in your life know there is help available and it comes in many forms. From medications for opioid use disorder to residential treatment, individuals struggling with substance use have many options for care. Break down barriers. If you’re able, take the pressure off your loved one when they choose to seek treatment. Offer to make the phone call or give them a ride to their appointments or treatment center. This support can make all the difference in someone’s recovery journey.
